The government has signed a €4 million deal (about Rwf3.5 billion) with the Netherlands to connect more than 5,200 households to the national grid as part of an electricity access rollout programme, reports the New Times.
“Energy is a key component for industrial growth, which will play a key role in the creation of job opportunities as prescribed by the Second Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy agenda,” said Kampeta Sayinzoga, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance.
While the government plans to connect more than 70% of households to the national grid by 2018, currently only 16% of households are connected to electricity.
